Amanda Harrington’s Top Tanning Tips

Dubbed ‘the Michelangelo of tanning’ by Vogue, Amanda has been responsible for tanning the bodies of Sienna Miller, Jennifer Aniston and Blake Lively.

After 15 years of experience and executing over 10,000 tans, Amanda has launched her much-anticipated first product line. Here, she shares her top tanning tips for a natural, at-home sunless glow…

I wanted to create a tanning range that gives you a multi-dimensional tan that makes you glow, not a flat brown. Tanning is a powerful tool. I see the ‘peacock effect’ time after time when I tan, this self-assurance that gives you a new confidence and connection to your body. It’s everything modern tanning beauty should be.

It’s all in the prep…

The biggest mistake people make is not spending enough time preparing their skin for a sunless tan.  We prep our face before makeup, our hair before styling so why not prep the skin before tanning!? This gives the best, longest lasting results. 

Prep the skin by exfoliating off all dead skin cells using our New Skin Body Glycolic Scrub to reveal the renewed skin beneath— which is softer and smooth, ready for hydration. That way, the colour (tan) will blend and absorb perfectly onto your new skin. Lasting much longer.

Think about your undertones…

I have spent years perfecting these colour tints, moving away from the industry standard of ‘light’ ‘medium’ and ‘dark’ and taking into consideration colouring, and the way you tan naturally in the sun, developing Natural Rose, Natural Honey and Natural Olive. 

Tanning by skin tone ensures your colour doesn’t sit lifelessly on the skin and instead reflects your natural bronzed colour.  I want the skin to look the best version of itself.

Use brushes…

The easiest way to apply tan in tricky areas such as hands, feet and around your ears is to use Tanning Brushes. 

For around your face and ears, use a light spritz of the mist on either the Face Lifter or Face Buffer Brush and buff in circular motions around the ears, neck and into the hair line. 

For your hands and feet, these areas can get a little dry around your knuckles and ankles.  To make sure they are super hydrated and protect apply some of the Ultra Balm Barrier cream before you buff on the tan with the brush.  The brush should ensure the tan is even and the Ultra Balm will mean the tan does not collect or look too dark in these tricky areas. 

Prolong with a primer…

If you’re worried about your tan wearing off in patches, Apply the Pre-Colour Primer, which is packed with Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen, to maintain the moisture in your tan before you apply the Face Mist and Body Mousse to deepen the colour. It can also be used to extend the life of your tan; apply every two days after application to maintain your glow with its low-level tanning agent.

Stay hydrated!

Finally, my number one tip for looking after and prolonging your sunless glow is to HYDRATE! When your skin is perfectly hydrated your tan will look more radiant and fade better.
