Trying to find the perfect red lipstick is no mean feat. Do you like a deep berry hue or a flaming orange red? Then there’s the finish to consider: matte, glossy, satin or stain? And what about the longevity? Does it wear off patchy or imprint on your lips for days? In short, trying to find the best red lipstick can be a long process involving a LOT of trial and error.
But if you don’t have the time (or money) to try out hundreds of different lipsticks, we’ve roped in the help of those who have tried them all. These 7 women are experts in the beauty industry, each having tried hundreds of different lipsticks through the years, to whittle out the very best.
Here they share their all time favourite red lipstick shades…
I have a brand new fave – Patrick Ta – She’s Not From Here – I’m not a fan of the cringe name but the formula is incredible – matte suede finish, majorly vibrant colour, and it literally lasts until you actively remove it. It’s the most stunning, striking orange red.
Make Up 54 Fluid Lipstick is amazingly long-lasting and doesn’t budge or transfer onto my face mask (winning!). I much prefer applying my lipstick with a gloss wand rather than straight from the bullet, it just gives much more precision and control. The pigment is super intense and I love that it has pinkie undertones which are much more flattering on my skin type than blue-based reds.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso: from the moment I slicked this one, I knew it was the one. A bright cherry red that makes teeth look whiter, the formula also manages to nail that comfortable (not cracked) matte finish.
My fave is Fenty Stunna Lip Paint in Uncensored. It is the most comfortable liquid matte lipstick. It doesn’t crack when it dries and it is the PERFECT true red. Not too blue, not too orange. When I wear it to work I only have to reapply once throughout the day. It’s also the perfect lipstick to wear to hide a hangover – bright, bold, and distracts from the tired eyes 😉
If there was a cult collection of red lipsticks, MAC Lady Danger would surely feature? I’ve rarely seen a make-up artist without it in their kit and I’m a bona fide fan too. It doesn’t bleed or fade and has a knack of suiting everyone. If that doesn’t make it legendary, what does?
It probably comes as no surprise that my ultimate red is MAC’s Ruby Woo. Everything from the vibrant shade that somehow suits every skin tone to the velvety matte finish, makes this lipstick my mouth’s main squeeze all year round.
I’ve always been convinced red lipstick doesn’t suit me until I tried Code 8 Matte Velour Lipstick in Opera. It’s highly pigmented and has more blue undertones rather than orange so it really compliments fairer skin tones and doesn’t budge all night!
