Cut down on Waste with These Refillable Beauty Products

August 1, 2020

2020 has been a year of uncertainty and change… and whilst single-use plastic might be on the up (with PPE becoming a new normal for a lot of people) one thing that’s for certain is that we’re finally scrutinising our own eco-footprints and looking to reduce the waste and packaging we leave behind where we can.

Whilst small steps can lead to big changes, it’s up to the brands and corporations to take note of what consumers now want.

So what’s the answer? Whilst recycling comes into play, there’s also a lot of room for error. On the other hand, refillable packaging makes a compelling argument. In fact the LCA Centre says that buying a refill instead of a new product saves on average 70% of CO2, 65% of energy and 45% of water. They’re the kind of stats we can get on board with.

So where can you start and which brands can you support? Whilst this list is by no means exhaustive, we can only hope more brands will pull up and start offering easier and more convenient ways to consume…

Ouai

A brand that’s really stepping up their eco-cert game recently is Ouai. New launches have been repackaged in 100% recyclable (and recycled) packaging — whilst shampoo lines are now also available in refillable packaging. Why does this make a difference? Ouai’s refillable pouches use 60% less plastic than their rigid bottles and also require less manufacturing and transport meaning their CO2 emissions are also lower. Plus, they you to refill three bottles per pouch, for the price of two— an added bonus while doing some good for the earth.

L’Occitane

L’Occitane have been ahead of the curve for a long time, offering refillable pouches before anyone else way back in 2008. Their eco-refill pouches use 98% less packaging and are also 100% recyclable with TerraCycle.

FYI: if you return your beauty empties to a L’Occitane store to be recycled, you’ll receive 10% off your next purchase. Win.

Isle of Paradise

One of the latest beauty brands to offer an earth-friendlier option is tanning brand Isle of Paradise.

Their new Refill Water Pouch is made using 81% less plastic and are a sustainable way to keep your tan glowing without having to re-buy bulkier bottles.

Kjaer Weis

The original refillable brand, Kjaer Weis has become synonymous with conscious luxury beauty. Each product is delivered in a metal, refillable case — plus all the formulas are Certified Organic resulting in responsibly resourced ingredients that work with the skin rather than against it.
